Oshakati town launches electrification project
Seven villages will benefit from the initiative.
OSHAKATI – The Oshakati Town Council (OTC) on Friday officially launched a rural electrification project earmarked for villages on the outskirts of the town.
Oshakati Premier Electric (OPE), a subsidiary company of the council, will run the electrification project that will see the villages of Othingo, Oshandumbala, Oshinyadhila, Onawa, Emono, Okaku Kiipupu and Onendongo benefit from the initiative.
Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony to mark the commencement of the project at Oshandumbala village, OPE chief executive officer Nelson Sheya said the OTC granted and requested that the electrical company retain 50% of its return on investment for the next seven years in order to electrify these areas which amounts to N$25 million.
‘Patience’
He said the project will kick off in Oshandumbala this financial year and urged community members to adhere to regulations by safety officers at all times during and after the electrification of their respective areas.
The mayor of Oshakati, Angelus Iiyambo, said his council has a mandate of ensuring that the residents of Oshakati receive basic services such as water, electricity, sanitation and decent living conditions.
“I therefore commend OPE for its continuous effort in ensuring that the residents receive electricity and for embarking on this project,” Iiyambo said.
He called on residents of the town to be patient as the project requires a lot of money, time and labour at ensuring that all the people are connected to the power grid. - Nampa
