THE UNMASKED RIDER WRITES:

Dear Honourable Minister, as soon as the State of Emergency was lifted by the President, it was replaced by regulations, which some commentators believe could have been thought out only by mad dogs.

The regulation that should sound nationwide warning bells is the one targeting mask abstainers, providing for heavy fines or extended prison sentences.

One ponders if the ministers, advisors and the WHO gave sufficient thought to the possible unforeseen outcomes of such a draconian regulation?

The first mitigating consideration should surely have been the economic fact that 90% of the Namibian population do not possess N$100 000.

A further consideration would be to estimate the number of mask abstainers, which by an conservative estimate could be 5% of the total population and will equate to some 120 000 offenders.

To ensure that the unmasked “criminals” are all brought to book the army and the police will have to be deployed countrywide to summarily apprehend the culprits.

By further extrapolation it will be found that some 110 000 Namibian souls will not be able to pay the N$100 000 fine.

Therefor 110 000 Namibian citizens will instantly become wards of the Namibian state, to be accommodated in the 13 prisons scattered across the country!

At say an estimated cost of N$25 000 per prisoner per year it will be costing the taxpayer a whopping N$2 750 000 000 per year.

The latter is only the monetary cost and does not reflect the social and economic impact on the dependants left stranded by the incarceration of their normal monetary support base.

Finally, it is impossible to determine how many of the unmasked technical offenders will become real criminals while incarcerated and therefore indoctrinated by hardened real life criminals?

The real impact of this mad dog legislation is too unspeakable to imagine.

It is hoped this bit of legislation will be taken to the vet and put permanently to rest.

It does not belong in a civilised society.
