NUST this month hosted its sixth programming competition.

The theme of this year’s competition was ‘Re-envisioning Higher Education in a Post-Covid Era’ and it was sponsored by MTC, PWC and NamPower.

Fifteen secondary school teams and fifteen teams from tertiary institutions participated.

In the tertiary category, NUST’s second team took the prize with Unam’s first team and the Lingua team following in second and third place respectively.

On high school level, the Deutsche Höhere Privatschule emerged victorious ahead of second-placed St George’s Diocesan School and third-placed Delta Secondary School Windhoek.

The programming competition was established by the Namibia University of Science and Technology’s Computing and Informatics faculty in 2016. It is aimed at encouraging critical thinking and problem-solving, and sparking students’ interest in computing.

The NUST Faculty of Computing and Informatics has ensured the success of this competition for the past six years, with the last two competitions being held online due to restrictions brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic.

This idea, however, was not a new concept to the organisers when the Covid-19 pandemic hit Namibia. The idea to host the competition online dates as far back as 2007 with the NUST faculty of computing an informatics hosting internal events through an online platform sporadically.

During its lifetime, the competition has expanded to cater for institutions of higher learning as well as secondary schools all over Namibia.
