Nujoma hands over integrated land use plan to Zambezi
The minister urged all parties to take full ownership and show commitment towards the plan.
KATIMA MULILO – The Mminister of land reform, Utoni Nujoma, handed over a ten-year integrated regional land use plan to the Zambezi Regional Council (ZRC) at Katima Mulilo last week.
Nujoma reminded the gathering that the plan will provide vision, direction, coordinated action and investment, while it will also maintain regional priorities and avoid duplication.
He stressed that the plan must be used for the protection of bio-diversity, sustainable natural resource management and for the adaptation to and mitigation of climate change.
The minister further called for the aggressive implementation and compliance monitoring of the plan.
He said through the initiative, the ministry has further created a platform for enhanced stakeholder engagement in planning matters that would address socio-economic development issues within the region.
Traditional authorities
Nujoma urged the regional council and its stakeholders to take full ownership and show commitment towards the plan as it is aimed to benefit the Zambezi Region and its residents.
Receiving the plan, Zambezi governor Lawrence Sampofu thanked the Mashi, Mafwe, Masubia and Mafwe traditional authorities for their full participation and valuable inputs during its draft phase, adding that the wisdom, advice, support and constructive criticism was highly valued.
Sampofu noted that one of the objectives of the plan is to correct deficiencies in the land use in Namibia and to find more sustainable ways to use land in terms of environmental, social and economic sustainability.
The governor further called for compliance monitoring of the plan, reminding regional staff members that implementation activities will be inserted in their performance appraisals. - Nampa
