Due to Covid-19, no club rugby was played in Namibia during the 2020 calendar year.

The Namibia Rugby Union (NRU) board has set the middle of April as its target date for restarting local club rugby.
After a board meeting last week, the NRU’s acting chief executive, Theo Grunewald, wrote: “Dear council members, I wish to inform you that the board plans to resume with the leagues by the middle of April 2021, subject to approval by council at the AGM set for 27 March 2021, as well as the Covid-19 regulations at that time.
“It is envisaged that a single round will be played. The draft league programme will be forwarded to council in due course.
“Clubs are thus urged to commence with full contact training.
“Clubs are also reminded that the Premier League clubs will have to field women’s teams. The board will avail N$17 100 per club for this purpose.”
Only a small number of school matches were played last year, while the friendly Old Boys match between Windhoek High School and Windhoek Gymnasium was the only known rugby match played at senior level in the country last year.
Namibia is set to host Rugby Africa Cup’s pool A matches from 1 to 11 July, with Madagascar and Ivory Coast as the visiting teams.
The best two teams of each pool will qualify for the Rugby Africa Cup 2022 (Top 8), which will serve as the final Rugby World Cup 2023 qualification event.
Namibian under-20 players have been invited to register for trials this coming Saturday, in the build-up to the Rugby Africa Barthes tournament from 25 March to 4 April in Nairobi, Kenya.
