NRCS drought relief cash support launched at Khorixas

The Namibia Red Cross Society (NRCS)'s drought relief cash support for households severely affected was launched in Khorixas on Tuesday.Delivering the keynote speech at the occasion, acting chief regional officer, Emilia Alweendo said the recurrent drought led to the call for drought relief support and various interventions, including monetary donations, food and other essential goods.“The NRCS continues to complement efforts of the Namibian government in providing humanitarian assistance to communities affected by various disasters such as drought. This intervention aims to provide relief to vulnerable communities severely affected by drought, particularly through two key outputs namely, enhancement of food security and improved access to water in the Khorixas Constituency,” she said.Alweendo added that as a result of a market analysis conducted in the constituency earlier this year, the NRCS identified a total of 1 172 households to benefit from this intervention.Benefits The programme will mainly benefit small-scale farmers in the Khorixas Constituency, whose livelihoods have been heavily compromised by drought, the household analysis shows that 60 per cent are women-headed households and 40 percent are headed by men, with about 70 percent of the identified household sizes of 4 and more people, she said.NRCS provides basic needs assistance through cash as a relief intervention to vulnerable households and further assists with the rehabilitation of 15 water points and boreholes in the Khorixas Constituency. The identified water points will be upgraded to solar-powered water points.“On this basis, the national humanitarian movement with the financial support of N$ 4 323 000 is being pumped into this intervention.
