A CONCERNED NAMIBIAN WRITES:
Dear Mr President and all Ministers
In connection with the contentious 2%, I would like to share my Government pay slip and budget with you, so that you can actually see that we, the people you are dealing with, are made of flesh and blood and are not just a number on a payroll.
Just a quick background.
I am a 57-year-old female and have been teaching for 35 years. I’m extremely good at my job. I was one of two representatives for our country at a Southern African Maths Congress. I also offer Spring School classes for Maths; do presentations at Maths Congresses – in essence, a hardworking citizen working for our nation.
My qualifications are a 4 year Higher Education Diploma and a Further Diploma in Management. I think I am more capable of running as a candidate for Minister of Education than most of our Cabinet’s members.
My payslip is already saddening . . . and you still want to deduct 2%?! One can barely survive on a salary like this.
You cannot even take a 0.5 % off my salary. You are already deducting N$ 1 000 per month because I was “overpaid”.
MY PAYSLIP (MAY 2019)
Payments:
Basic salary N$ 21 992.58
Housing allowance N$1 315.00
Transport N$ 640.00
Total N$ 23 947.58
Deductions:
Housing allowance N$ 1 000.00
Medical aid N$ 360.00
Social security N$ 81.00
GIPF N$ 1 539.48
Tax N$ 4 138.25
Union membership N$ 80.00
Total N$ 7 198.73
Net pay: N$ 16 748.85
MY BUDGET
House Instalment N$ 3 000.00
Body corporate levy N$ 1 100.00
Municipality N$ 475.00
Electricity N$ 800.00
Car N$ 2 200.00
Short term insurance N$ 1 200.00
Other insurance N$ 1 700.00
Medical cover N$ 500.00
Internet N$ 534.00
Gimnasium N$ 800.00
Church/charity N$ 1 000.00
Security services N$ 300.00
Clothes N$ 200.00
Total N$ 13 809.00
(Please don’t tell me how to save on my budget - that’s not the moral of the story; the moral of the story is the 2%.)
Please, our country is in a financial mess and you want to claim it from our law abiding citizens? You ask us to “tighten our belts” but it is already so tight!
Get rid of the Chinese who are not paying taxes, or let them start paying tax - and have a heart for our own people – the everyday folk just making an honest living. With all due respect, Mr President, why does our Government spend N$730 million on themselves and then want to take from our poorer people?
