• During June 2015, Dumbura’s Trading Enterprises cc trading as MJ Realtors and Training Centre in collaboration with the Namibia Chess Federations hosted the first-ever official chess tournament in the North.
The response was astonishing as 56 participants from as far as Windhoek, Otjiwarongo, Okahandja and Walvis Bay came to take part.
Among them were The Windhoek Chess Arbiters including Chess Federation president Mr Otto Nakapunda; vice-president and national champion Mr Charles Eichab along with one of the country’s top female players, Jolly-Joice Nepando.
Paresis Chess Club from Otjiwarongo and other juniors also competed, including fifth grader Tapiwa Mutasa from Kleine Kuppe Private School in Ongwediva who won the best cadet player for Oshana 2015.
Since last year August MJ Realtors and Training Centre has been training some private schools like Cabatana P. School, Kleine Kuppe and earlier this year also Integrity Private School. Even with only two schools trained, the region now has teams ready to compete. The target remains to expand to more schools, including some in Opuwo and Oshikuku who have expressed interest.
The organisers’ deepest gratitude goes to Mr John Ikondja, the principal for Integrity Primary School for his great support since 2015. He helped sponsor the tables and chairs for the 2015 Oshana Open chess tournament of that was held at Maroela Mall in Ongwediva. Mr Gerome and Mrs Amalia Schmidt allowed the use the Mall dome area for that tournament.
