ALI S FROM WINDHOEK WRITES:

I feel compelled to share after seeing nothing in the media. I was one of the first witnesses to a horrific car accident on Sunday evening 16 May 2021 that some of you may have heard of.

The non-functional traffic lights at St Paul’s corner are partially to blame, but the reality was that a bakkie speeding at approximately 100km/h hit a car that had correctly yielded at the non-operational traffic lights.

By the time I managed to exit the car that I was a passenger in, I ran to a mother - frantic in the middle of the street - because she could not find her child. We searched together in confusion, even opening the boot to try find her. The 2-3 year old (my estimate) child had been flung against the curb with obvious injuries.

The discovery was painful to describe. I removed every piece of clothing I could and did what I could, which felt like nothing but was thankful to see angel nurse Adele arrive shortly.

The sad reality that followed after the baby girl was put in the ambulance, was an attempt to give statements to police. None were received or noted. The driver was standing with the officials laughing about the encounter. Phone numbers were offered for supporting statements to follow up. I am yet to be called.

I was waiting to share as I was hoping to see at least a media report of the incident.

The little girl was admitted to hospital and declared stable the following day, yet she is still being assessed for brain injuries given the severity of what took place.

My request to all is, have you heard of the incident? If not, I implore the family to pursue their case against the driver. While in a state of shock because of what I witnessed that night, what remains the most shocking for me is how the authorities dealt with this incident.

My last request is, strap in. The image of that child’s head in my hands that night will likely never leave my mind. She was not in a safety seat and the reality of the consequences hit home very hard.

Sending safe wishes to all.
