No place for racism, sexism and tribalism, says Ekandjo

Namibians must fight racism, sexism and tribalism in order to be successful in building a complete “Namibian house”.These were the sentiments expressed by Tim Ekandjo, Chief Human Capital and Corporate Affairs Officer of MTC, at the Namibia Sports Commission’s annual awards on Friday.The event was hosted in Windhoek and saw various Namibian athletes honoured in a glittering ceremony.“Racism is a refuge for the ignorant; it seeks to divide and destroy. It is the enemy of freedom, and deserves to be met head-on and stamped out. We must classify racism, sexism and tribalism as criminal. Racism is not an opinion, it is an offense,” Ekandjo said.He stated that Namibian sports should reject racism with the contempt it deserves.Ekandjo noted the reports that a Namibia rugby player allegedly racially abused Pat Mulamba, a black South African player, in a recent match played in Windhoek and “nothing” was done to address the matter. “We all kept quiet. Let us give racism, sexism and tribalism a red card.“We must shame those who resort to racist behaviour, we must call them by name and we must ban them from our societies,” he continued.Ekandjo listed several names of heroes of the liberation struggle, whom he said collectively fought against apartheid and for the independence of Namibia. All of them defied apartheid, racism, sexism and tribalism, he said.He concluded that for Namibians to fight such attitudes, they must view themselves as “Africans first, and then proud Namibians”. This, he said, will help teach the future generations that all humans are equal despite colour, creed, race, religion or tribe.Ekandjo was speaking in his capacity as the representative of the main sponsor of the awards, MTC. - Nampa
