Minister of Industrialisation, Trade and SME Development, Lucia Iipumbu has expressed disappointed that no application was received from businesses in the Kavango East Region for grants from the Industrial Upgrading Modernisation Program (IUMP).

The program launched under her ministry in 2012 is aimed at developing support mechanisms that enhance the development and expansion of industrial activities in key economic sectors.

These sectors are agro-food processing, fisheries, pharmaceuticals and minerals.

Iipumbu raised the concern on Tuesday at a business meeting with the business community in the Kavango East Region.

She said through the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) trade related facility the IUMP last week injected N$ 10 million into Namibia's informal sector which were distributed to 45 beneficiaries.

'Out of 45 grants which were given from the N$ 50 000 to N$ 500 000 no single application came from the Kavango East Region. Painful as it is but truthful. The grants were advertised on social media and print media but no one from this region applied,' she stressed.

Kavango West

Iipumbu said only one application was received from the Kavango West Region which also did not meet the requirement: ‘However, this applicant tried and we assisted the applicant to meet the requirement.”

The Minister said she had a discussion with the councillor of the Rundu Urban Constituency Victoria Kauma that this type of Information be channelled to her office in future.

She said although this opportunity passed business people should in future fully capitalise on such opportunities.

The minister said her ministry also launched the Covid-19 business continuity grant of which again applications from the Kavango East Region were very limited.

The Covid-19 grant for survival for businesses she pointed out is ongoing and is being processed adding that it is the ministry's goal to make sure that one or two businesses from the region benefit from it. - Nampa
