New range of medium trucks launched
AS part of their commitment to placing the customers? needs first, Nissan Diesel launched their new medium commercial truck range.
The new series is available in three variants known as the UD 35A, UD40A and the UD 40L-A, a long-wheelbase derivative. ?Many improvements have been made to improve driver comfort, overall performance and fuel consumption,? Mr Hannes du Toit of Nissan Diesel in South-Africa said.
He added that many of the changes are due to the emission fuel legislation that will be implemented in South Africa. The range is powered by the ND TD42T in-line sixcylinder turbocharged engine which produces 87 kW at 3 250 rpm and 275 Nm of torque at 2 000 rpm. Although the vehicles look more rugged and bigger, the body length and wheelbase of the vehicles are unchanged, but various changes have been made to the engine. A steel bumper replaced the previous plastic bumpers and a rev counter was added.
?The 4 169 cc capacity engine ensures that the unit is able to operate at a low load percentage, con- tributing to the expected durability of the range,? Mr Junior Bruwer, managing director of Pupkewitz Motor Division said.
The power is delivered through a five speed ND MES50C manual synchromesh transmission and is combined with matched final drive ratios to offer excellent economy and performance. In addition power take-off can be installed on the gearbox.
Vacuum assisted dual line hydraulic drum brakes are used with a mechanical transmission mounted drum brake that serves as the emergency brake. A remote mounted butterfly type exhaust brake is also included in the brake system.
According to the information on the new range a hydraulic power assisted re- circulating ball and screw steering system is used for optimal handling.
?The number of turns from lock to lock is 4.5 and the steering column can be customised to the drivers? liking with tilt and rake adjustments.?
To further improve the driver comfort the cab height has been increased by 85 mm. New emphasis was placed on safety and comfort and therefore the cabin is appointed with streamlined ergonomics to ensure they operate with ease.
The cabs are also fitted with an adjustable driver?s seat and column-mounted controls for lights, indicators, windscreen wipers and the exhaust brake. The chassis of the new medium commercial vehicle range has a high tensile reinforced parallel ladder frame with riveted cross members and inside reinforcements.
The range?s suspension consists of a drop-forged ?I? beam with reverse ?Elliot? steering knuckles in front and a fully floating banjo type axle with single reduction hypoid differential in the rear.
Semi-elliptic leaf springs with telescopic shock absorbers provide a softer ride that with the previous models. The UD 35A has a gross vehicle mass of six tons and a 3 350 mm wheelbase, while the UD 40A and UD 40L-A have a mass of seven tons with a 3 350 mm and 3 795 mm wheelbase respectively.
