New blood at Meatco
ONE of Meatco’s goals is to improve its services to all cattle producing farmers in Namibia, both emerging and commercial. With this in mind the corporation has expanded and diversified its procurement function by appointing a new Senior Manager for Procurement, Vehaka Tjimune and transferring Andries Binneman, who previously held the position, to Senior Manager for Feedlots. In an effort to address dwindling cattle numbers in Namibia, Meatco has set various new procurement operations in place.
These include the Etunda feedlot which will aim to aid sustainable beef production and serve as an additional marketing channel for farmers in the Northern Communal Areas, a financing initiative which will aid weaner producers in rearing slaughter oxen and a lot feeding initiative which has seen very keen interest from farmers.
Due to the scope of these projects and similar projects in the pipeline the former Senior Manager of Procurement, Andries Bin- neman, was appointed as the Senior Manager of Feedlots to allow him to focus his expertise there.
Together with Tjimune’s appointment and dedication to other procurement activities, this will allow for an increased capacity of Meatco’s procurement function. Tjimune brings a diversified philosophy to Meatco’s procurement department and believes that in future Meatco will play a more proactive role in its procurement ventures.
"We want to take the farmer by the hand and help lay the groundwork for better production and not just wait for cattle to be produced. We must find out what it is that Meatco can do to help farmers produce more and quality cattle."
Meatco values its commercial farmers, but also recognizes the importance of emerging farmers for the sustainability and the future growth of the meat industry in Namibia. Tjimune brings the necessary experience and insight to the company to tap into this resource while understanding the needs of the commercial producer.
Tjimune was the Executive Director for the Namibian National Farmers Union (NNFU) since 2005, although he had been acting in the position since 2003. He recently resigned from the NNFU after serving them for almost ten years to join the team at Meatco. Before joining the NNFU, Tjimune worked with the Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Forestry for seven years.
He obtained a diploma in Agriculture at Tsumis and his research project for a postgraduate diploma was on how accessible agricultural extension services are to women farmers. Tjimune notes that 60 per cent of farming activities are run by women.
He currently holds a Master's degree in Rural Development obtained from the University of Reading in England. Meatco firmly believes that the combined efforts of Tjimune and Binneman will add greatly to the strength and depth of Meatco’s procurement capabilities and lay the foundation of a brighter future for the meat industry in Namibia.
