Namibian Open Squash Championships
BUCCANEERS Squash Club hosted the MultiChoice Namibian Open Championships recently and must be once again commended for the efficient manner in which it was handled. All the players were impressed at how well it was organised and how smoothly things ran.
Special thanks to MultiChoice Namibia for their generous sponsorship, without which it would not have been possible to attract so many exciting players from neighbouring countries. Furthermore, their continued support of squash in Namibia has helped inspire the youth to be a part of a growing junior squash programme, which is keeping the sport alive and competitive.
The Championships were superb, with the top players providing the spectators with some spectacular and entertaining squash. The Men’s A Final was a clash between two South Africans, Rodney Durbach and Clinton Leeuw. It was a terrific final, which had everyone staring in awe at the great execution and control of their shots.
It could quite possibly have been the best Men’s Final ever seen in a Namibian Open in Walvis Bay. It was a closely contested match, which could have gone either way. Clinton was the better player on the day and just managed to oust Rodney 3-2, to take the title of Namibian Open Champion 2008. The Ladies Final was also one of the toughest the club has seen in years.
South African Zoe Smith managed to beat Isabelle Schnoor (an ex-Swakopmunder) from the Isle of Man 3-1, with a lovely performance of hard, controlled squash to lift the 2008 title. The other results were: Men’s A play-off for 3rd and 4th position – Ian Rowette (Namibia) beat Henry Smit (South Africa) 3 – 2. Men’s A Plate – Jacques Steenkamp (Namibia) beat Mitchell Mwanza (Zambia) 3 – 0.
Ladies Plate – Trix van der Westhuizen (Namibia) beat Andree Steyn (Namibia). Men’s B – Junior Correia (Namibia) beat William Hofmeyer (Namibia) 3-2. Men’s B Consolation Cup – Clinton Dewing (Namibia) beat JP Kouwenhoven (Namibia). Men’s B Plate – Danie Greeff (Namibia) beat Paul Lombard (Namibia).
