Namibia exports millions worth of charcoal

American Ambassador to Namibia, Lisa Johnson joined industrialisation and trade deputy minister, Verna Sinimbo on Friday to send off a consignment of Namibian charcoal to the United States (US) worth over N$ 2 million.The 350-tonne consignment is an export deal between Africa Burns Charcoal, King Charcoal and US trading partner, The Good Charcoal Company.Namibian charcoal has been certified by the International Forest Stewardship Council as the greenest charcoal on the planet in terms of international standards for environmental, economic and social sustainability.Speaking at the launch event held in Windhoek, Sinimbo said that the charcoal industry in Namibia is indeed of export quality, which will lead to socio-economic improvement. “We believe this marks a breakthrough for Namibian charcoal and will create job opportunities for the thousands of Namibians working in the charcoal sector, and other commodity sectors which enjoy tariff-free export to the United States,” she added.PartnershipDuring the same event, Johnson stated that the US government through the US Agency for International Development entered into a partnership to support Namibia’s export growth to South Africa and the US.“The partnership involves providing technical assistance to Namibian Charcoal Association members to advance export readiness including supporting FSC certification, creating buyer linkages and technical assistance to meet US and South African market entry requirements,” she added.King Charcoal Manager, Wessel Thuysen, said they have entered into a partnership with several farmers in Epukiro, Grootfontein, Tsumeb, Kamanjab, Otavi, Outjo, and Otjiwarongo just to mention a few.Namibia Charcoal Association plans to attain volumes of up to 20 000 tons per month in 2022.Both the minister and ambassador lit a ceremonial fire with Namibian charcoal to sanctify the significant charcoal exportation growth event. - Nampa
