Namib Quest MTB Challenge growing in leaps and bounds

The annual Windhoek Lager Namib Quest MTB Challenge has shown phenomenal growth of 80 percent in just one year which means that 32 two-man teams will be at the starting gates on 29 April for one of the toughest mountain bike races in Southern Africa. Announcing this on Tuesday at the Namibian Breweries, organiser Tinus Hansen of African Extreme Promotions (AEP) said the Namib Quest has also received confirmation of an American team?s participation in this year?s event. Their names will be announced next week.

On Tuesday the focus was on the Namibian Breweries? official Windhoek Lager team, consisting of Johan Vosloo and Antonio Simoes. The two seasoned riders will team up in the colours of Windhoek Lager, the official sponsor of Namibia?s version of the annual Absa C ape Epic. Namibian Breweries Manager of Events and Promotions, Ian Stevenson, praised AEP for the tremendous Gouws verras Enduro-uitdagers growth of the event while confirming the solid partnership established between the two companies.

?Last year?s inaugural Windhoek Lager Namib Quest confirmed to Namibian Breweries that it is a challenge with huge potential and now we know we have saddled up a winning horse.? Stevenson said the big increase in entries for the 480 km event over six grueling days in the saddle, puts the Quest firmly in the international arena. AEP has already made a breakthrough in the USA, and we expect a much bigger American participation next year.?

Hansen confirmed this by saying the Americans are adamant to arrive in much bigger numbers next year. At the same time, Jacques Tattersall, freshly back from the Cape Epic, confirmed that he will be teaming up with Archie Graham for the Quest. Vosloo and Simoes have been training hard since they were informed of the Namibian Breweries? sponsorship and said their goal is to finish the tough event by riding within their limits.

?We have not known each other for long, but have already established a firm partnership as foundation. We are aware that this year?s Quest is all about team work, and we are gearedup to do well,? said Vosloo (35). He completed the first Quest as solo rider and knows the pitfalls and heartaches that may lie ahead.?

They won?t be tackling the event to try and be in the leading group; it?s all about the experience and to witness the breathtaking scenery along the way, added Simoes (38). He has participated in many shorter races over distances of 35 to 40 km, and sees the Quest as the highlight of his MTB career.

The South African team of Ludwig Malherbe and Alonero Barnard will be one of the men?s teams to watch out for with stiff competition expected from Johan Fourie/ Willem Engelbrecht, Heinrich Kohne/Christo Swartz and Dirk van Schalkwyk/ Stefan van Doorn. In the women?s category an ongoing battle is expected between the South African team of Helene Wigget/ Wilmarie Jacobs, and Namibia?s Zoe Mitchell/Astrid Helm and Charmaine Shannon/Monica Grossmann.

The Quest starts at 07:00 in front of the Klein Windhoek Guest House, and ends six days later at Tiger Reef in Swakopmund.
