Namib Quest here we come!
ASK MTB riders why they will line up to depart on a 500 km journey through some of the most rugged terrain in the Khomas Hochland and the Namib all the way to Walvis Bay, and they might come up with many different answers. Or they will say to you its pointless; that kind of question will get lost in the dirt on a very lonely bike.
But ask the somewhat 21 riders who will tackle the first Windhoek Lager Namib Quest at the crack of dawn this coming Sunday, and they will tell you it?s all about the quest and the challenge. Just like the name of this first epic journey suggests.
And therein lies the beauty of the six days of cycling on single tracks and jeep tracks where few other people have ever set foot. Let alone cross the Namibian Highlands and the harsh Namib Desert on a mountain bike! African Extreme Promotions (AEP) put this unique MTB quest together and for starters, Namibia?s multiple African MTB king, Mannie Heymans, will lead the pack in his traditional gruelling style.
He will be accompanied by his 24-year-old Garmin/adidas team mate, Francois Theron from South Africa. To Heymans and riders of his calibre this presents an outstanding chance to spend some quality time in their minds and reset the moral compass.
With so much experience of some of the most demanding rides on the planet, they regard something like the Namib Quest as a journey into yourself, and not just out into the open. Riders on the Namib Quest will no doubt experience some of the most awesome scenery on the trail, and Tinus Hansen of AEP confirms this.
He and colleague Russell Paschke did all the scouting over the past few weeks and they are sure it promises a journey not to be forgotten easily. Hansen says the landscape has been changed in some places because of all the rain since February.
?Brace yourself for notoriously steep climbs and equally hair raising descents, as well as many a river crossing. We have worked very hard to ensure the single tracks are rideable, but it is definitely not plain sailing. The Namib Quest does not have to be a race in the true sense, but it will unlock your potential as you venture into the unknown. The challenge is in the terrain, and the beauty is in the landscape with amazing vantage points. Whether your name is Mannie Heymans or Joe Average, the Namib Quest is a rider?s challenge.?
He says the Quest is bound to become a world class event that will draw the big names in MTB in time to come. Needless to say, the Namib Quest will be the ultimate test of strength, character and tenacity. ?A truely once in a lifetime experience where riders will taste true escapism like never before.
