Dr Eileen Africa and Sharnay Botha - Watching your baby go from one milestone to the next is very exciting and a proud moment for all parents.Every time your baby performs a new skill, like lifting their head, rolling over, reaching for a toy or crawl across the room, it is proof that your baby is developing and growing. Learning a new skill provides your child the opportunity to access new information and explore the world around them. The early years are important for your baby’s overall development, which is why you have to try optimizing the time spent with your baby to ensure they get the stimulation they need to thrive. It is important to note that milestones are merely a guideline or framework for monitoring your child over time. Although it is important for children to reach these milestones, you have to understand that each child is unique, and their developmental rate can differ due to various intrinsic and extrinsic factors. Watch out for the following milestones, which are important for your developing baby:By 3 months old the baby should be able to:• Roll to the side• Lift up chest while on tummy• Inspect the fingers• Bring hands to mouth• Visually follow people• React when spoken to6 months:• Sit momentarily with support• Reach with one hand• Place hand on the bottle• Feed him or herself crackers• Bangs and shakes toys• Distinguish between familiar and unfamiliar people• Smile when looking in the mirror9 months:• Start to crawl• Pull to stand• Bear walk• React to his or her name• Imitate sounds12 months:• Stand well without support• Take independent steps• Take off his or her hatYour baby’s overall development is a major achievement and a source of pride.
