Yochanaan Coetzee - Luxury automaker Daimler AG is the latest marque to announce a preventative recall of some of its models after fears that the starting current limiter could be overloaded and overheat under certain “unique” conditions.

Mercedes-Benz has not been exempted from the trying times that some the world’s biggest car brands have been facing in recent years, after announcing that they will be recalling more than a million vehicles worldwide after 51 cases of fires were reported, 30 of which occurred in the USA, one of the German auto giant's biggest markets.

Mercedes-Benz South Africa’s parent company has determined that on certain A-Class (176 platform), B-Class (242/246 platform), CLA (117 platform), GLA (156 platform), C-Class (205 platform), E-Class (213 platform) and GLC (253 platform) vehicles (produced between February 2014 – February 2017) a high electric current can flow through the starting current limiter causing it to overheat after repeated attempts to start the vehicle in situations where the vehicle’s engine is damaged and cannot crank (e.g. when the engine has hydrolocked).

“As the occurrence of such incidents on the engine is very rare, the described issue of the starting current limiter might only occur in very rare cases as well,” said Jeanette Clark, Mercedes-Benz South Africa Ltd manager corporate affairs: marketing and sales.

“As our top priority is the safety of our customers, Daimler AG will make sure that all affected vehicles will be installed, as a precautionary measure, with an additional fuse in the electric line to the starter. This is being done free of charge wherever vehicles are affected,” she added.

Though the official notification of the start of the precautionary campaign in Southern Africa has not been issued, preliminary estimates of affected vehicles in South Africa are in the range of 5 100.

“The campaign will be rolled out globally towards the middle of the year,” Clark said.

“We are monitoring the situation as a matter of priority and will be in a position to update all affected parties when more information is available,” she said.

New vehicles and those currently in stock at dealerships will have the faulty fuse issue corrected before being sold.
