Yochanaan Coetzee - The energy was palpable when Pupkewitz MegaTech celebrated the opening of their new stand alone renewable energy branch on Friday.
This comes three years after the introduction of renewable energy equipment at their flagship MegaTech store.
“We’ve seen exponential growth and interest in solar industry technology and the advantages that solar technology offers to both communities and to the well-being of the environment,” Morne Nell, managing director of Pupkewitz MegaTech, said at the opening.
“It is for these reasons that we decided to do justice to the renewable energy department by opening our first renewable energy branch, that we see today.”
Radiant range of solutions
The store stocks a wide range of lifestyle and industrial solar technology - from personal solar cellphone chargers to heavy-duty solar water pumps and street lights - with the aim to give consumers and service providers access to quality affordable solar technology products.
Namibia currently only generates about 40% of its electricity demands. This, coupled with the fact that roughly 47% of Namibians do not have access of electricity, makes the ease of installation and cost-effectiveness of solar technology a proposition that is hard to ignore.
“Most Namibians who are still living without electricity, cannot afford to pay to be connected to the national electricity grid. This combined with the large investment needed from the state into transmission lines, make the use of solar technology to produce electricity a very vialable concept,” Nell added.
‘Golden thread’
The deputy director of energy at the ministry of mines and energy, Daniel Zaire, who officially opened the new outlet, concurred with Nell on the importance of embracing green technolgy.
“Energy is the golden thread that runs right through all. It powers our economies and makes prosperity possible,” he said.
“We must ensure that all people have access to modern clean or green energy services. And we must move very rapidly toward a clean energy economy to prevent the dangerous warming of our planet.”
“Namibia and other SADC [Southern African Development Community] member countries stand ready to support you in in your work and endeavour to achieve the SDGs [sustainable development goals] for all with clean and affordable renewable energy for all,” he added, highlighting the ministry’s “Sustainable Energy for All” initiative.
