Learners get help with algebra, geometry and graph equations

High school learners can now get extra help with mathematics following the launch of a website that teaches algebra, geometry and graph equations.
The website was established by Karen D’Emiljo, the author of the mathematics textbooks used in Namibian high schools. The website, www.straightlinepublishing.co is linked to her YouTube channel.
D’Emiljo is a teacher by profession with 22 years experience in writing math textbooks for Grades 8 to 12 in Namibia. She holds a Diploma of Higher Education and Bachelor of Science Degree (BSc) from the University of the Free State in South Africa.
The website contains 142 video clips on algebra, geometry and graph equations posted in August this year.
D’Emiljo told Nampa on Monday the video clips, with her voice in the background, give students instructions on how to solve different tasks using easier methods.
The new video clips are based on the 2017 Mathematics syllabus.
It is her dream to teach math for free so that Namibians can become inspired and start to enjoy the subject.
“I believe that by teaching math through the website, I will meet many students who wish to learn math anytime and anywhere by using a cellphone or computer,” she said.
Grade 10, 11 and 12 mathematics teacher at the Otjiwarongo Senior Secondary School, Foibe Nghishitelwa, said she often visits the website.
“It is a very useful teaching tool for me as well as for slow learners. They can visit it as many times as they can until they understand the topic,” said Nghishitelwa.
Ndinelao Kalushu, a 20-year-old Grade 12 student at the Namibian College of Open Learning, encouraged other students who are struggling with math assignments to visit the website.
“The methods on the website for solving equations are much easier and clearer, so I call on other students to make use of it until they understand the problems,” said Kalushu.
D’Emiljo held a week-long math ‘mass teaching crusade’ at Otjiwarongo for free in May this year. She promised to conduct similar teaching sessions during school holidays on an annual basis.
