Marco’s expansion progressing well

Marco Fishing has been working steadily on its expansion plan its Lüderitz factory since its partnership with Mekarilakha Fishing, the company said in a statement.The construction project for the factory upgrade and enlargement is well under way. Marco is also in the last phase of the construction of their new dedicated long-line fishing vessel, the M.F.V. Meka Bay.Marco Fishing and Mekarilakha Fishing pooled their resources, with Meka taking up shares in Marco in January 2016. The company is now in a position to exploit the fishing rights and quotas of both right holders, the statement says. Apart from the hake quotas of both Marco and Meka this also includes the large pelagic fishing rights granted to companies affiliated to Marco.Marco Fishing is one of the smaller hake right holders and has been operating in Lüderitz since 1993. The company also diversified by investing in the large pelagic sector. Mekarilakha Fishing is a joint venture of five new right holders, as grouped together by the MFMR. By acquiring shares in Marco, the company has made a significant investment in ownership of fishing vessels and processing facilities, joint control, Lüderitz-based operations and contribution to new and existing job security, the company says.With the additional hake quota available to the company, the board made the decision in middle 2016 to expand the factory and the Marco fleet by ordering a new hake long-line vessel. This vessel is currently in the final stages of construction and should be operational next month. Meka BayThe M.F.V Meka Bay is said to be the largest fibreglass vessel constructed to date in the southern hemisphere, the company says. The vessel is 30 metres in overall length, 8 metres wide and will be able to accommodate a crew of 38.The investment to enlarge the Marco Fishing Factory in Lüderitz, currently about 1000m2, is N$10 million. As part of the civil works concluded to date some 1000m3 of rock has been broken and excavated due to the hard and sloped rock formations which is one of the challenges found when building in Lüderitz.This upgrade will increase the combined factory floor space by some 950m2 - of this, 365m2 will be new staff facilities and ablutions. With the bigger factory the processing capability is also enhanced with new filleting and skinning lines and IQF spiral freezers. The installation of an upgraded ammoniac plant and two new one-tonne plate freezers have already been completed.With this Marco Fishing has re-emphasised its commitment to the regional development and specifically investment in the town of Lüderitz. The new factory and related processing capability, as well as the new vessel will result in additional job creation in excess of 100 people, the company says.
