Livestock marketing gaining momentum
The total number of livestock marketed in May 2021 amounted to 76 223 animals compared to 65 884 recorded during the preceding month.

Due to the unavailability of animals in the market for the month of April 2021, there was a massive decline in the number of livestock marketed.
Statistics released by the Namibia Statistics Agency (NSA) for the month of May 2021 indicated that there was a massive improvement in the amount livestock marketed with South Africa maintaining its top position.
The livestock marketed composite Index on a monthly basis increased by 15.7% in May 2021 compared to a decline of 14.4% registered in April 2021. Annually, the index declined by 24.7% for the period under review.
In absolute terms, the total number of livestock marketed in May 2021 amounted to 76 223 animals compared to 65 884 recorded during the preceding month. While 72 576 livestock were marketed during the corresponding month of 2020, NSA pointed out.
The index for cattle export abattoirs and butchers increased to 4.2% in May 2021 on monthly basis, from a decline of 25.3% registered in April 2021. On an annual basis, the index declined by 54.1%.
The number of cattle export abattoirs and butchers stood at 6 074 animals in May 2021 compared to 5 831 recorded in the preceding month and 13 219 head of cattle exported during the corresponding month, a year earlier, NSA said.
The index for live cattle exported on hoof on monthly basis recorded an increase of 4.9% in May 2021, compared to a decline of 12.3% registered in the preceding month. Whereas an increase of 66.8% was recorded annually.
The number of live cattle exported on hoof was 10 225 in May 2021 compared to 9 748 recorded a month earlier while 6 130 live cattle were exported on hoof in May 2020.

The index for small stock export abattoirs and butchers went down by 65.5% in May 2021, worse off when compared to a decline of 48.3% recorded in April 2021. The index declined by 84.3% year-on-year.
The number of small stock export abattoirs and butchers declined to 2 126 in May 2021 from 6 154 recorded in April 2021, while 13 516 animals were registered during the same month of 2020, NSA added.
The index for live small stock exported to South Africa, Angola, Botswana, Zimbabwe and Zambia registered a monthly growth of 33.6% in May 2021, while an increase of 48.9% was recorded year-on-year.
The number of live small stock exported to South Africa, Angola, Botswana, Zimbabwe and Zambia stood at 54 203 animals in May 2021 compared to 40 567 exported in April 2021, while 36 409 animals were exported in May 2020.
During the month under review, the index for pigs on a monthly basis increased by 0.3% in May 2021, from a decline of 13.8% recorded in the preceding month. The index recorded a growth of 8.9% year-on-year.
The number of pigs slaughtered locally increased to 3 595 in May 2021 compared to 3 584 pigs slaughtered during the preceding month. A year earlier, the number of pigs slaughtered locally during the corresponding month stood at 3 302, NSA said.
