In sy staatsrede verlede week het president Hage Geingob ruiterlik erken Namibië kon beter op sekere gebied gevaar het.
Die staatshoof het “terugslae”, “foute” en “mislukkings” as 'n integrale deel van die lewe bestempel. Dit is so.
Met die destydse aankondiging van die Harambee-welvaartsplan het Republikein gesê ambisieuse oogmerke is beter as lae of middelmatige doelwitte.
Soos Geingob gesê het, help dit nie om jou deur die negatiewe te laat verswelg nie. Tog bevat mislukkings en “teleurstellings” die bestanddele vir sukses in die stryd waarin opgee geen keuse is nie.
Inderdaad het Namibië sedert 1990 reeds baie vermag. Die vraag is hoe gerat ons regering en staatsbestuur is om vinnig genoeg koers te verander wanneer planne nie werk nie? Hoe pragmaties is ons om veranderinge aan te bring sodra planne begin uitrafel, te duur word, nie resultate toon nie en ontspoor? Selfs klein verstellings kan reuseverskille maak. Hoe lig is die hande op die spreekwoordelike stuurwiel?
Krampagtige vasklou is 'n resep vir 'n ongeluk.
Het alle senior bestuurders hierdie vaardighede? Hulle, saam met alle verkose leiers, moet deel van die oplossings eerder as nuwe en voortgesette terugslae wees.
Baie kiesers is nie oortuig hierdie pragmatisme bestaan nie. Minstens nie oral waar dit moet en in genoegsame hoeveelhede nie.

Will the Census Count All of America?
If the Supreme Court allows a citizenship question in the 2020 count, it could profoundly affect the nation's representative democracy.
The Constitution calls for an “actual Enumeration” of each state's population every 10 years.
Next week, in what promises to be the highest-profile case of this Supreme Court term, the court will consider whether the Trump administration complied with these dictates when it sought to add to the 2020 census a question about whether the respondent is a United States citizen.
Federal law protects the privacy of everyone who responds to the census. But that's small comfort for immigrants and their families living in a climate of fear under President Trump.
By the bureau's own, nonpartisan analysis, adding a citizenship question could result in an undercount of 6.5 million people — close to the entire population of Indiana or Tennessee.
The justices' decision could have profound consequences. The census today helps determine key aspects of the nation's representative democracy: how many seats in Congress will be apportioned among the states, and thus in the Electoral College; the distribution of billions of dollars in federal funds; and how state and congressional districts will be drawn in the next redistricting cycle.
Whether the nation gets an accurate and fair count of its residents is now in the justices' hands.
