Kia Picanto wins South Africa?s Auto Annual People?s Choice Award

Initiated by Johannesburg- based publishers The Future Group, in association with Avusa Media, Absa Vehicle Finance and research house TNS South Africa, the first ever Auto Annual People?s Wheels Awards took place at Monte Casino recently.

This award function, with the main objective of honouring motoring excellence, was the first of its kind to take place in South Africa, and differentiates itself from other award ceremonies as the outcome is completely based on the public?s votes.

With a total of 26 categories, ranging from budget city cars to exotic sport cars, from bakkies to luxurious SUV?s, rugged 4x4?s and taxis, in the end it was up to the people to decide which vehicles should be crowned winners within the 26 individual categories, including over 400 model ranges, and 1500 derivatives.

Kia?s model line-up was represented very well in most of the categories it competed in, and faced stiff competition from German favourites.

As with many other current competitions, the new Kia Picanto was a hot favourite from the beginning, and was crowned as the winner of the ?Budget Buys? category, scoring a majority of 59.77% of the votes in the category, beating competitors such as the Chev Spark Lite (14.65%), Hyundai Atos (11.88%), and Tata Indica (4.39%).

The biggest surprise of the evening however, was when the new Kia Picanto was announced as the overall People?s Choice winner, scoringthe most votes across all categories and derivatives, making it South Africa?s most popular vehicle for 2011.

?The new Picanto is one of the most feature rich and affordable vehicles in its segment,? says Kia Motors South Africa?s CEO Ray Levin. ?It offers today?s consumer with an incredible value proposition, offering a specification level only found on vehicles larger segments of the markets. We are very proud of this achievement, and with our new product line-up, we are confident that the public will speak again in Kia?s favour,? he said.
