Namibia needs to keep reviewing its laws and policies from time to time in order to ensure that it meets the present corruption challenges, justice minister Yvonne Dausab has said.

Dausab, while addressing delegates and senior government officials during the commemoration of the Anti-Corruption Day in Windhoek on Wednesday, said even though Namibia is ranked in the top five least five countries in SADC as per the Transparency International Corruption Index, it does not mean there is no corruption, but rather a recognition of good governance policies and efforts made to curb corruption.

“The fight to end corruption is a never-ending commitment and people should not relax, therefore the country must from time to time continue reviewing policies and laws to ensure that they meet the present corruption challenges. The damage caused by corruption can be devastating and have a long term negative impact on the economy and livelihood of citizens,” said Dausab.

She stressed that the Anti-Corruption Day is a good opportunity to promote systems of integrity, accountability, and transparency. It is part of the strategy that was approved by the cabinet in 2016 and launched the same year with the aim of increasing the level of political accountability, preventing corruption in government offices, ministries, agencies, and public enterprises.

EVALUATION REPORT

At the same occasion, Dausab launched an Evaluation Report produced by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) that highlights and assesses the progress made in the execution of activities by the commission.

The report shows that 70 out of 75 actions were implemented.

“The evaluation report is very encouraging. It is evident that the strategy is not just worth the paper it is written. It shows that the institutions, particularly public institutions have taken the implementation of the strategy seriously.
