Inter-high a great success
School sport continues to grow from strength to strength, with last weekend’s inter-high-school competition proving to be another great success.

Over the weekend, the fourth annual inter-high-school sport day between Windhoek High School (WHS) and Windhoek Gymnasium took place at the Vegkop stadium in Windhoek.
The schools battled it out in rugby, netball, hockey, tennis, basketball, squash, table tennis and triathlon.
During the first-team rugby match, the schools brought the energy and passion, and the team of Windhoek Gymnasium emerged victorious with a final score of 26-24.
“This weekend is so much more than just sport. We had so few opportunities to practise sport and play rugby, and this inter-high has given both schools the opportunity to enjoy the sport we love so much,” said Riaan Grove, the captain of the Under-19 team of WHS.
“To see the school spirit, how grateful our learners were for this opportunity, gave me goosebumps. As a school we are grateful for each and every person who made this possible. This inter-high celebrated the relationships and bonds between our two schools, and the impact this has on school sport and development of our players and athletes is of the utmost importance,” said Hawie Engels, the principal of WHS.
The first netball teams created some memorable moments, with the team of Windhoek Gymnasium again having the upper hand with a final score of 45-38.
The captain of the first rugby team of Windhoek Gymnasium, Owen Hawanga, said their team knew this final match would be challenging, but as a team they knew their defence and teamwork would be critical to their win.
“Our energy and spirit helped us to get the win, but this is so much more than rugby. On the field we are competitors, but off the field we are brothers, and that is without a doubt the spirit of this inter-high,” Hawanga said.
“This competition allows our two schools to bond, to grow together and share in the love of sport. We compete, but we are also able to support each other and celebrate our wins together. We look forward to the next inter-high,” said the rector of Windhoek Gymnasium, Abrie Myburgh.
