Denver Kisting – Toe my broeder en kameraad, Wesley, my presies twee jaar gelede omgepraat gekry het om aan ’n 7 km-wedloop by Avisdam deel te neem, het ek geen idee gehad wat op my wag nie.

Ek is steeds nie heeltemal seker – met die klem op mál – hoekom ek ingestem het nie. Tot in daardie stadium het selfs ’n gesprek oor mense wat 5 km hol my asem laat jaag. Ek sou beslis nie eens in die teenwoordigheid wees van mense wat ’n meter verder as dit hol nie – dit sou my in koue angssweet laat verdrink het.

Kom ons kom terug na die bitter koue winter van 2017.

Voor daardie Sondagmôre het ek darem daarin geslaag om my en my Google-kind te kry om ’n keer of wat om die blok ons ruim lywe gewaggel te kry. Dit was die somtotaal van my voorbereiding.

Fast forward tot dié week: Ek sit Woensdagaand in ’n hollesing en straal soos ’n maagdelike bruid van opgewondenheid.

Dis toe dat ek besef ek is amptelik ’n hardloper.

Ek het aan die spreker se lippe gehang toe hy praat oor die drie beginsels wat jou kan help om jou holreis na hoër hoogtes te voer.

In die eerste plek, sê hy, moet ’n mens konsekwent wees. Konsekwentheid is dié kenmerk wat jou gaan help om nie net sterker en doeltreffender te hardloop nie, maar gaan jou in staat stel om jou doelwitte flenters te hardloop: “Dis die enkele grootste bydraende faktor tot prestasie.”

Hy beveel aan dat ’n mens minstens 80% van jou hardloopsessies aanpak teen ’n pas waartydens jy ’n gesprek met iemand kan voer. As jy nie kan klets nie, hol jy te vinnig, sê hy.

Baie atlete sweer hoog en laag kragoefeninge maak hulle beter hardlopers.

Woensdagaand het ek gehoor dis nie so eenvoudig nie. Dis net kragoefeninge wat ’n mens sterker vir hardloop maak wat sinvol is. Kragoefeninge for the sake of just that is nie baie sinvol nie, maan hy.

Dan, sê die kundige, moet ’n mens op herstel fokus. Dit sluit fisieke en sielkundige herstel in.

Onder meer moet ’n mens fokus om lyf en gemoed te laat rus ná strawwe oefening of ’n resies of ’n buitengewone lang sessie.

Sowat 90% van hul verantwoordelikheid as holafrigters is om te verseker hul kliënte word nie beseer nie, vertel die spreker.

’n Mens moet ook daarop fokus om gesond te bly.

Oorsake van pyn is ’n teken deur ’n mens se liggaam dat hy nie die mas kan opkom nie en dat hy rus benodig.

Volgens hom is slaap die mees onderskatte sportverbeteringstegniek.

Tussen 7½ en 8 ure se slaap saans behoort ononderhandelbaar te wees. ’n Mens moet probeer om glad nie naby ’n foon- of rekenaarskerm te wees minstens 40 minute voor slaaptyd nie. Trouens, maan hy, toestelle met skerms behoort nie in die kamer toegelaat word nie. Selfs wanneer ’n mens slaap, kan die ligte wat aangaan wanneer korrespondensie deurkom slaapgehalte benadeel.

Oor voeding sê hy tydsberekening is belangriker as inhoud, maar vars is uiteraard beter as geboks.

Die laaste belangrike beginsel hou met beplanning verband: Stel geskikte doelwitte, beplan jou sessies en onthou jy ding net teen jouself mee.

“Hol jou eie resies.”

Verlede Saterdag het ek my sewende halfmarathon voltooi – die vierde een vir 2019 alleen.

Hoekom op aarde sou ’n mens dit wou doen veral as jy nie gejaag word nie? Wel, om mee te begin: As ek wel eendag gejaag word, sal ek hopelik vir die vyand kan weghol en so my lewe red.

Maar ek is veral dankbaar vir die verhoogde vlakke van energie, die skerper fokus, die meer gematigde gemoed, die dieper en inniger slaap, die deernis jeens myself en ander en die les wat ek keer op keer ná 21,1 km te voet leer: Níks is onmoontlik nie en hol red regtig my lewe.
