Helpline grateful to FNB Foundation

Hafeni Katamba, Interim National Director of LifeLine/ChildLine Namibia has expressed his sincere gratitude to FNB Namibia Foundation Trust for the continuous assistance over the past years.

“Without donations and support from the FNB Foundation living up to LifeLine/ChildLine Namibia's mission would be an increasingly difficult task.

“The donation received to the value of N$200 000.00 contributed towards the running costs of the Counselling Centre, enabling the organisation to continue providing much needed services to the public.”

Katamba stated that due to the support from organisations such as FNB Namibia, the staff could be increased by two HelpLine Counsellors, as well as a Programme Manager.

“This means that we can continue, and expand our work. Some schools visited over the past year by our counsellors include; A. Shipena Secondary School, Moses van der Byl Primary School, Van Rhyn Primary School, and Dagbreek School for the Intellectually Impaired - where we worked with groups and individual learners guiding and teaching them on HIV prevention, peer pressure, gender, sex education, physical and sexual abuse and self-esteem.

Our counsellors also do regular talks on Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and Sexual Reproductive Health (SRH). Other talks involved participation in the “Fatherhood Gender Conference” at the Hilton, Suicide Prevention with UNAM students, talks at a coalition of churches conference, and also at a wellness week with the staff of the Office of the Auditor-General. Debriefing and trauma counselling are conducted on a regular basis.”

Katamba shared one success story whereby a 19-year old student came in for face-to-face counselling after contacting the helplines, fearing for her life.

She explained that she was being stalked on her cellphone, receiving messages and calls from different numbers. This had been going on for over a year. Says Katamba: “Our counselling focused on looking at different options the client had, providing a safe environment for her to go through the process of finding resolutions to her situation.

“Over time she became more confident in decision-making and took the courage to open a case with the police. This story ended on a positive note and we are grateful that we could assist and allow her to find her best personal solution.”

“As an organisation we look forward to future partnerships and creative ways in which we can serve the Namibian population by means of much needed counselling services and other interventions which impact on social problems and challenges in our country,” Katamba added.
