Gunning for World Cup qualification

Namibia’s quest to qualify to the world cup and eventually winning its first world cup match has begun with the appointment if a coach with world cup experience.
JESSE JACKSON KAURAISA – New Namibia senior national rugby team coach Allister Coetzee says his immediate wish is to help the country qualify for the 2023 rugby World Cup.

The Namibia Rugby Union (NRU) appointed Coetzee as senior national team head coach from Friday, 25 June to the end of the 2023 world cup.

“I am grateful and honoured to be appointed to this position. I will do everything in my power to see Namibia qualify for the 2023 RWC in France.

“There are going to be trying conditions and circumstances as the world is currently facing this pandemic. I would like to thank the NRU and World Rugby for the confidence and trust bestowed on me,” Coetzee said in a statement.

The South African’s first assignment for the national team will be in the Rugby Africa Cup tournament scheduled for Ivory Coast from early next month.

The Africa Cup will pit Namibia against Madagascar and Ivory Coast with the top team qualifying to the Rugby Africa Cup 2022.

The Top 8 competition the teams qualify for will serve as the final qualification event to the 2023 Rugby World Cup.

Coetzee served as South Africa’s senior national team assistant coach between 2004 and 2007.

He was part of South Africa’s 2007 world-cup-winning team that produced a remarkable performance at the rugby spectacle.

He has also had a stint as coach of the South African national team from 2016 to 2017.
