Gravity Cup a success

The finals of the Namib Poultry Gravity Cup took place on Friday and Saturday at the Affies Park sports grounds in Windhoek.

The tourney showcased teams competing for the coveted title in their respective age categories in sevens rugby, fast-five netball and six-a-side soccer.

This year marks the second year of sponsorship by Namib Poultry with a massive injection of N$8 000 for each winning team in their age category.

The two-month league started in February and attracted over 30 schools from across the country in different age categories with over 71 games played throughout the season.

Shaun Powell, the main organiser of the event, said the preparations for the festival were a great experience.

They will announce the sevens rugby teams that will participate in South Africa later this week. These will include U/15 to U/19 teams and these teams have been scouted during the finals by a representative from the Golden Lions (Pieter Visser, the general manager of the Lions) and one of the players of the Namibian rugby team that went to the RWC.

Some of the sponsors included Top Score, who provided the players with breakfast, and Engen, who subsidised the fuel costs for teams traveling from outside Windhoek to attend the finals.

The Gravity Cup started with only 12 schools and has grown to more than 30 schools participating.

Over the weekend they had more than 50 teams, who played around 53 sevens matches, 60 netball games and 13/14 soccer matches.
