Gochas community library celebrates World Book Day
The Gochas community library celebrated World Book and Copyright Day on Friday with a number of activities aimed at promoting reading.
Children dressed as characters from books and fairy tales such as Winnie the Pooh and Cinderella read stories and recited poems at the event, which was also attended by their parents.
Assistant librarian Grace Diergaardt said during the get-together World Book Day gives people who love reading a chance to celebrate their favourite books and focus on reading. “The day celebrates authors, illustrators of books, publishers, the protection of copyright and most importantly, reading,” she said.
World Book and Copyright Day is a yearly celebration of reading, publishing and copyright on 23 April.
This is the 20th time the day, organised by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco), is celebrated.
With 23 April falling on a Sunday this year, the Gochas community celebrated on Friday with the assistance of Unesco.
Diergaardt said this year, they wanted to get parents more involved in reading with children up to Grade 7 as most parents do not read with their children.
“We invited the parents in order to sensitise them about the importance of reading as it has been observed that many Namibians do not take an interest in reading,” she said.
Diergaardt also made reference to a report by the Southern and Eastern Africa Consortium for Monitoring Educational Quality (SACMEQ), which says many children do not comprehend what they read.
“The fact that we do not read constructively can be seen in our results at school, therefore we have to start with the young ones to create a culture of reading at an early age,” she said.
The SACMEQ reports assist educational planners and researchers by way of studies of the quality of their education systems.
Gochas village is situated in the Hardap Region, some 110 kilometres southeast of Mariental.
