Gentle heart and hands
JAMES PIETERS WRITES FROM TORONTO, CANADA:
Please allow me space in your paper with a positive message and to honour someone who touched our hearts as family deeply a few weeks ago.
The story starts with my mother visiting Namibia from South Africa before anyone ever dreamt that this lockdown could occur and our borders be closed. As family we decided the best and safest for her would be to stay on in Namibia where my sister could take care of her and protect her against the Covid threat.
Unfortunately mother came down with pneumonia and ended up in a terrible weakened condition needing constant care. The state hospital discharged my mother at a time where she really needed medical care more than when she was admitted.
My sister running an office from home, exhausted and falling ill herself, ended up desperate for assistance with mother. It was when my sister and mom needed help most that the gentle heart and hands of Metoline Gowases crossed our path.
Metoline, it was not only the way you read Bible to my mother that impressed us, nor the songs you sang to her in a time we thought she was breathing her last couple of breaths. The highlight was when there was no other option for us but to put her in the care of an ambulance service, desperate to get her to better medical care in SA.
That moment you absolutely refused to let mom travel by herself and fought your way into a spot on the ambulance, and this on the coldest evening in July. This to make sure that she is well taken care of and comfortable along the way.
An almost 20 hour drive in the cold, having a family of your own at home that needed taking care of, placing your own life at risk - all of this did not keep you from caring more about her comfort than your own. And this for our mother, a mere stranger to you in all sense of the word.
Metoline, it's people like you that change the world and we definitely need more like you. I would like to on behalf of myself as well as my family thank you from the bottom of our hearts for giving us hope in humanity. May your kindness, big heart and dedication go on to touch many more lives wherever life and our loving heavenly Father may lead you.
