Franse kiesers het gister na die stembus gegaan vir die eerste rond­e van 'n presidentsverkiesing wat krities vir die toekoms van Europa is en 'n aanduiding sal gee van kiesers se onvergenoegdheid met die politieke establishment.

Daar is nagenoeg 47 miljoen kiesers in Frankryk wat onder streng veiligheidsmaatrëls moes besluit wie om te steun: 'n Pro-Europese Unie gematigde nuweling; 'n skandaalgeteisterde veteraankonserwatis wat openbare besteding aan bande wil lê, 'n verlinkse, Euroskeptiese bewonde­raar van Fidel Castro of die eerste vrou om moontlik Frankryk se president te word en wat die land se grense wil sluit en van die euro ontslae raak.

Die uitslag sal fyn deur die wêreld dopgehou word wat wil sien of die vlaag van populisme wat meegebring het dat Brittanje gestem het om uit die Europese Unie te tree en pres. Donald Trump in Amerika aan bewind geplaas het, aan die toeneem of afneem is.
