Foreword - Delve Deep Namibia 2021

Tom Alweendo; Minister of Mines and Energy, Namibia
“Compared to other industries, the Namibian Mining industry has showed immense resilience as it has weathered the storm of uncertainty relatively well thanks to the positive working relationship in the face of accelerating change between government and mining colleagues.

As mining companies navigate through this time, the numbers are telling a positive story as the mining sector contributes 10.1% GDP and employing a workforce of 14 591 directly as per 2020 statistics, with diamond mining being the lead sub-sector.

On this journey, the mining industry focuses on the next normal by firstly, heeding government’s call to support national efforts in the fight against Covid 19. In this instance, members of the Chamber of Mines of Namibia collectively donated N$77,9 million, on known record, towards national and local efforts. Secondly, while ensuring the preparedness of local hospitals, many mines are driving the Covid-19 vaccine campaign as the workforce remains vulnerable. This is in effort to safeguard lives of those in communities that they operate in.

As we look back at our responses to the pandemic, the mine industry continues to demonstrate shear grit and to prioritise perseverance, personified by the men and women who get the job done; safely, effectively, efficiently and adhering to Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) standards. A core set of collaborative actions will ensure that the industry keeps an eye on the future as it impacts lives, livelihoods and learning.

Being one of the world’s most endowed mining jurisdictions, we have a responsibility to attract capital to get a competitive return, sustainably so. In this regard, we should look at connecting the future of mining with next generation values, bridging the work experience gap needed in the employment market, and finding sustainable mechanisms of building mining legacies.

The Namibian nation is endowed with human capital of pioneers with the responsibility to delve deep to find Namibia’s treasures. From land to sea, our industry has the minerals and metals to build the nation and beyond, whilst bringing prosperity to all Namibians. I believe that this edition of Delve Deep Namibia will give a glimpse of the future, while celebrating industry, as mines remains the backbone of the economy, contributing a corporate of N$2,2 Billion and N$ 1,67 Billion in royalties.

The Ministry of Mines and Energy remains committed to promoting, facilitating and regulating development and sustainable utilization of Namibia's mineral, geological and energy resource through competent staff, innovation, research and stakeholder collaboration, in a conducive environment for the benefits of all Namibians and the world.

We believe that the Namibian mining industry is at the heart of what Namibia is, who Namibians are and what we are about. As we seek a new normal, there are unique opportunities to explore new technologies and create cutting edge work environments. Boundaries are being pushing back, obstacles overcome and horizons broadened.
