Ford's Everest: As surefooted as a Sherpa

Yochanaan CoetzeeWhen the Everest was introduced in late 2015, it shook up a segment that the likes of the Trailblazer and Pajero were valiantly fighting to wrestle from the Fortuner and the Discovery 4.On the back of the Ranger's runaway success, people were baying for a large luxury SUV from the blue oval. Now you may not see too many around, but the economy is biting so hard, you may not see very many of any nice. Or at least the really nice, nice stuff.Fortunately I can tell you that you don't have to spring the 700k for the top-of-the-range model, you could very confidently go for any of the eight derivatives you can create with either of two engine choices, two or four-wheel drive, three trim levels and manual and automatic transmissions.Besides the high-speed 3.2 XLT and Limited 4x4 models, you could pick up the 2.2 XLS in three versions, comprising a two-wheel drive derivative with six-speed manual gearbox, along with a six-speed automatic model. With either engine, Ford's proven “built tough” tranny proves time and again to be faithful and true. I hate when these bling beasts get relegated to town. I mean, the sticker is cool, but why have an excellent intelligent four-wheel drive system, if all you're going to do is conquer pavements?Ford claims the Everest boasts the best ground clearance in its class and with a lofty 225 mm and substantial 800 mm water wading depth, we're prone to believe it when seeing it in the long-legged, big-bodied, bear-like stance.While the fan favourite 3.2-litre engine has power outputs of 147 kW and 470 Nm, the 2.2-litre diesel I had, developed 118 kW and 385 Nm, and employed it more enthusiastically than one would expect. Seriously, even in the 2.2, when you put the pedal to the metal, it sweeps up the speedo much more gracefully than you'd expect given her gait and doesn't have to reach deep to get past slower traffic as you dice the dying sun.Both versions are rated for a maximum towing capacity of 3 000 kg, but if the mood is right, you should be able to haul slightly more.The Bear is huge and supremely comfy. It feels like you're in a high-spec Ranger, just wider and a bit more well appointed. Standard on all XLT and Limited models is Ford's SYNC3 entertainment and communications system that accepts a range of media and channels through 10 speakers to give you a great aural compliment to your already maxed out driving pleasure.On the XLS models you get the entry-level SYNC1 system, which offers Bluetooth with Voice Activation, plus mobile and multimedia device integration.Inside the Everest, one feels like you're in the middle of some wide open space somewhere. While it really is as wide as it appears, inside it feels much bigger and you immediately start craving a road trip - or a stretched out nap on the back seat.Overland and up a hill Like a well-run cabin in the winter woods, the Everest comes with a host of sophisticated technologies to keep you alive - even in the most daunting conditions. Standard features include Electronic Stability Programme (ESP) with Traction Control, Hill Launch Assist and Trailer Sway Control.Keeping you from bashing up your bear are rear parking sensors linked to a full-colour rear view parking camera on the 10 cm display for the XLS or the 20 cm touchscreen for XLT and Limited. Your higher specs are also fortified with an array of safe driving technologies. Highlights include its Adaptive Cruise Control with Heads-up Display, Forward Alert, Collision Mitigation and Distance Alert.Additionally, the Limited is equipped with Xenon headlamps with Auto High Beam Control, distinctive LED daytime running lights, Tyre Pressure Monitoring System and a 230-volt power inverter. Now for the sell Look, it shares an engine and suspension set with the hard-to-beat Ranger, but Ford has done well to elevate its comfort level to places that (dare I say), like the Fortuner, put the likes of Prado somewhat under pressure. With its unique character, the Bear definitely impresses and is a healthy, well-heeled hauler that, depending on your day job, could do either the school run or a craggy climb with the same unshakeable composure.
