FNB Foundation donates big to Red Cross

The FNB Foundation earlier this month handed over an amount of N$100 000 to the Namibia Red Cross Society. At the handover Revonia Kahivere, Corporate Social Responsibility Manager of FNB Namibia, said that FNB Namibia has realized that the task of eradicating poverty was momentous and the Foundation thus jumped at the chance to help with support – especially this year when thing were tough all around. She added: “The English language has great sayings such as walk the talk, practice what you preach, actions speak louder than words and in our vision 2020 we state that we wish to create a better world, while one of our values says that we are helpful. We wish to walk the talk today by committing an amount of N$100 000 to the Namibia Red Cross Society which will ensure that assistance in the form of food and drought aid reaches those that need it the most. People are one of the 4 pillars that the strategy of FNB rests on and we are humbled to be able to assist the people of our country.” She thanked the Red Cross Society for their hard work and dedication to the most vulnerable in the society and called on more corporates – who have not yet been involved - to assist the Red Cross in reaching their targets and objectives. Every bit helps and no donation or sponsorship is small. Bience Gawanas, Chairperson of the NRCS Governing Board expressed her heartfelt appreciation for the support which will be used to bring relief to many communities facing uncertainty and distress due to the drought situation. She added: “The recent 2016 assessment done by the Office of the Prime Minister and Ministry of Agriculture estimated that 729 134 people are food insecure and more than 595 839 need immediate assistance due to the drought. Hopes for relief in 2016 have been dashed by the erratic rains that were received during the last rainy season. As we await the 2016 crop assessment we all know that the numbers of those in need will double if not triple.” The Namibia Red Cross Society has the capacity to respond to the calamity, but lacks the means. To respond to the drought situation, the NRCS launched an appeal for N$13.4 million in September 2015. Thus far they have only managed to raise 15% of the funding required. The lack of support allows them to cater for only 1 200 people instead of the targeted 3 600. “I want to challenge every Namibian to support the NRCS fundraising campaign NAMIBIANS HELPING NAMIBIANS. The concept underpins our ubuntu spirit. Let us all play our part and save lives,” Gawanas concluded.
