First workshop to focus on primary immunodeficiency

Henriette Lamprecht
The first workshop to solely focus on primary immunodeficiency (PID) will be presented in Windhoek on Saturday.

The keynote speaker will be dr. Monika Esser, principal investigator of the Primary Immunodeficiency Registry of South Africa. The workshop starts at 08:00 at The Village Theatre, 18 Liliencron Street in Eros. Various speakers will share information on PID, with the workshop closing at 13:00. Local specialist prof. Clarissa Pieper will present patient cases, while dr. Carel Haumann from Pathcare will present a talk on PID diagnostics in Namibia. Parents and patients are welcome to this event.

Primary immunodeficiencies are disorders in which part of the body''s immune system is missing or does not function normally. To be considered a primary immunodeficiency, the cause of the immune deficiency must not be secondary in nature (i.e., caused by other disease, drug treatment, or environmental exposure to toxins).

Most primary immunodeficiencies are genetic disorders; the majority are diagnosed in children under the age of one, although milder forms may not be recognized until adulthood. About 1 in 500 people in the United States are born with a primary immunodeficiency.

The Africa Society for Immunodeficiencies (ASID) was formed by a group of experts in the field in order to better assist with the clinical diagnosis, laboratory work-up, genetic counselling, treatment options and patient organisations. They are affiliated to the European Society of Immunodeficiencies (ESID). The key driver in terms of the initiation is prof. Aziz Bousifiha, who is based in Morocco. Bousifiha has started what is now known as the A-Project/School, a project which Esser is hoping to initiate in Namibia. It is a structured teaching approach which starts with a morning meeting and a collaboration with local experts. For more information on the workshop, contact Tiana at 081 813 6347.

The programm is as follows: 08:30 - 08:45: Welcome (Cospharm/NBI); 08:50 - 09:00: What is ASID and A-project? (prof. Monika Esser); 09:00 - 09:15: Epedemiology of PID in Africa; 09:15 - 09:45: PID Classification and need for data; 09:45 - 10:00: Clinical Algorithms for PID; 10:15 - 10:45: When should current RIT''s raise concern?; 10:45 - 11:45: Basic laboratory investigation of PID, available diagnostic laboratory network; 11:15 - 12:00: PID case scenarios prepared; 12:00 - 12:30: The need for molecular diagnoses; 12:30 - 13:00: Discussion.
