Finland’s economic affairs minister visits Namibia

The business delegation accompanying the minister has as many as 50 representatives from companies and institutions in the cleantech, digitalisation, education and mining sectors.As Namibia offers a stable environment with well-developed infrastructure and services, several Finnish companies are interested in cooperation with local partners. Through investment in Namibia, Finnish companies also hope to increase their chances for expanding into other markets in Southern Africa.The amount of trade between Finland and Namibia has varied greatly over the recent years. A lot of potential for growth exists. Finland and Namibia share a very special bond with deep roots dating back to missionary activities in the 19th century. Since then Finnish experts have worked alongside their Namibian counterparts in many fields. Today, the strong partnerships comprise a diverse range of cultural, economic and scientific cooperation. Meetings Minister Lintilä will meet with President Hage Geingob and Vice President Nangolo Mbumba.Minister of economic planning Obeth Kandjoze will deliver keynote address at a reception hosted by Ambassador Pirkko-Liisa Kyöstilä. The delegation will also meet with minister of finance Calle Schlettwein, minister of higher education, training and innovation Itah Kandjii-Murangi, minister of industrialisation, trade & SME development Tjekero Tweya as well as minister of mines and energy Tom Alweendo.During the visit, minister Lintilä and the delegation are interested in learning more about, for example, the local business environment, opportunities for increasing trade, developing vocational education and teacher training in Namibia as well as the future of the Namibian energy sector. Business seminar On Tuesday, the delegation will partake in a business seminar together with local companies and institutions. Minister Lintilä will open the event. The seminar aims at showcasing Finnish know-how and promoting new contacts between various stakeholders in cleantech, digitalisation, education and mining sectors. The seminar will focus on business opportunities, success-stories of existing partnerships as well as connecting Namibian startups to Finnish innovation ecosystem. On Wednesday, minister Lintilä will continue his trip in Africa with a visit to Kenya. Most members of the business delegation will join the minister while some mining and cleantech companies will stay in Namibia until Friday for additional business-to-business meetings and site visits.
