Fewer cattle available for the export market

The index for cattle export abattoirs and butchers declined on monthly basis by 32.4% in April 2021 compared to escalation of 41.6% registered in March 2021. On an annual basis, the index declined by 31.8%.

According to the Namibia Statistics Agency (NSA), the monthly decline in cattle export abattoirs and butchers is attributed to the unavailability of animals in the market.

The number of cattle export abattoirs and butchers stood at 5 203 animals in April 2021 compared to 7 699 recorded in the preceding month and 7 630 cattle exported during the corresponding month, a year earlier.

The index for live cattle exported on hoof on monthly basis recorded a decline of 12.3% in April 2021, compared to a growth of 44.0% in the preceding month. Whereas a decline of 5.0% was recorded annually.

The number of live cattle exported on hoof was 9 748 in April 2021 compared to 11 109 recorded a month earlier while 10 262 Live cattle were exported on hoof in April 2020, NSA pointed out.

The index for small stock export abattoirs and butchers went down by 67.4% in April 2021 compared to a decline of 3.3% recorded in March 2021. The index declined by 88.0% year-on-year.

The reduction in small stock export abattoir and butchers on a monthly basis is attributed to the unavailability of animals in the market as farmers are restocking.

The number of small stock export abattoirs and butchers declined to 3 211 in April 2021 from 9 848 recorded in March 2021, while 26 673 animals were registered during the same month of 2020, NSA said.

Markets

The index for live small stock exported to South Africa, Angola, Botswana, Zimbabwe and Zambia registered a monthly decline of 72.5% in April 2021, while a reduction of 65.7% was recorded year-on-year.

The monthly decline observed in the index for live small stock exported was mainly attributable to unavailability of animal in the market, NSA said.

The number of live small stock exported to South Africa, Angola, Botswana, Zimbabwe and Zambia stood at 11 557 animals in April 2021 compared to 42 001 exported in March 2021, while 33 730 animals were exported in April 2020, NSA added.

During the month under review, the index for pigs on a monthly basis contracted by 13.8% in April 2021, from an increase of 13.8% recorded in the preceding month. The index recorded a decline of 8.2 percent year on year.

The number of Pigs slaughtered locally declined to 3 584 in April 2021 compared to 4 158 Pigs slaughtered during the preceding month. A year earlier, the number of pigs slaughtered locally during the corresponding month stood at 3 905.

Overall, the livestock marketed composite index on a monthly basis declined by 55.5% in April 2021 compared to an increase of 54.6% registered in March 2021.

Annually, the index declined by 57.1% for the period under review. In absolute terms, the total number of livestock marketed in April 2021 amounted to 33 303 animals compared to 74 815 recorded during the preceding month. While 82 200 livestock were marketed during the corresponding month of 2020, NSA said.
