Planning for the national examination are at an advanced stage as candidates have registered and have verified their examination registration details.

Admission permits have been printed and will be sent to schools in the next few months but no dates have been confirmed by the education ministry.

The ministry’s executive director, Sanet Steenkamp, says the external national examinations have been delayed by one month due to Covid-19 and this has had the same result on the announcement of results at the end of the year.

“The exams are delayed by about a month because of Covid-19, so we expect the release of results to have a slight delay as well. There is no specific date yet.

“Exams are a very delicate process and especially under the current circumstances, one cannot set a specific date for the results. However, the final date will be announced as usual at the appropriate time,” she said.

Precautions

Certain precautionary measures have since been put in place to make sure that learners will be safe while writing exams.

“Measures put in place for the commencement of face-to-face classes for grades 11 and 12 apply to the national examination activities as well. Rules and regulations were already in line with the social distancing requirement.”

If a learner tests positive for Covid-19, the ministry says it would help make sure that the learner is still able to write exams.

“Usual examination guidelines direct schools on what to do in cases of a candidate falling sick with any ailment, including contagious conditions like Covid-19.

“However, further and specific guidelines will be provided to the schools, worked out in collaboration with health officials,” Steenkamp said.

According to the ministry, the national examinations are guided by set standards, rules, regulations and requirements and these standards cannot be changed.

“Fortunately, these requirements are not in breach of any of the Covid-19 safety protocols. It only requires adherence by the candidates as well as the invigilators/officials administering such exams,” Steenkamp added.
