SWAKOPMUND – Namibian business mogul and entrepreneur, Erastus ‘Chicco’ Shapumba, has strongly dispelled the notion that entrepreneurship is simply a hobby or that Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) are created merely out of job desperation.

He was speaking at the official opening of the first-ever Swakopmund Mini SME Expo on Thursday.

“Entrepreneurship is the creation of businesses that can potentially function alongside the biggest industry leaders and create a new demand for products and services as well as encourage the growth of the middle class,” he said.

Governments around the world including Namibia, he said, concede that SMEs are the engine of growth in any economy.

Shapumba added that when nurtured properly, SMEs fuel innovation, create healthy competition, reduce the economic gap, widen the nation’s business footprint and create jobs.

More than anything, entrepreneurs encourage problem-solving because they have the flexibility to tackle problems and operate with fewer internal restrictions and less red tape, he informed the gathering.

The entrepreneur went on to say that SMEs add to the national income by redefining and disrupting markets, making way for new and improved products and services that will create wealth and by doing so, also brings about social change by stimulating an appetite for growth.

Shapumba urged SME owners to work with dedication, perseverance and to always be focused on the goals they aim to achieve, as these are the core principles of entrepreneurship. - Nampa
