Enthralling final round at trips tournament

IT was down to the wire at the recent Windhoek Country Club trips tournament.

The team of Graham Snyman, Marietjie du Preez and Garry du Toit looked favourites as they maintained the top spot on the leader board after each round.

Going into the penultimate round Snyman’s team had a lead of 17 points, but a solid performance by Johan Jacobs and team mates Louis Carstens and Chrisna Steenkamp whittled the difference down to only 7 points, ensuring a nail biting final between the two teams.

The last end of the blue-ribbon game saw Jacobs’ team lying four shots and poised to snatch victory from the favourites. The pressure was on Snyman and with his final bowl managed to draw the shot by a mere 2 cm, his team thereby claiming the tournament grand prize of N$21 000.

In the decider for third place Bea Lamprecht, Tony Bracale (SA) and Carin Swart took on the trio of Willie Esterhuizen, Will Esterhuizen (SA) and Diana Viljoen. Willie’s team won the game 18-7, while Bea was leap-frogged on the score board by Jean Viljoen’s team GCM Cellular.

From the onset the competition lived up to expectations with high quality bowling on display. The standard of the young local bowlers bodes well for the future of the sport in Namibia.

“The value of this tournament and attracting players from South Africa is exposing our younger players to different styles of play,” said Malcolm Lindsay-Payne, one of the sponsors.
