Engelbrecht & Grant winners at Mercury Summer Bass Classic

The Namibia Bass Angling Association eventually managed to successfully host the Mercury Summer Bass Classic at the majestic Lake Oanob Resort last weekend.
The event was initially scheduled for March this year and was subsequently postponed to September and then postponed again to November due to Covid-19 restrictions.
Amazingly, despite the torrid year most businesses have faced, all of the initial sponsors for the event stuck by their commitments which made hosting the event possible.
The fishing has been really tough over the past few weeks mainly caused by water which is high in nitrates and starved of oxygen. This is due to the current duckweed infestation caused by the inflow which Lake Oanob received during the last wet season.
The event was well attended with a total of 16 teams (32 anglers) that arrived at Lake Oanob to attend the captain’s meeting on Friday evening including a special team Mercury South Africa accompanied the president of the South African Bass Angling Association (SABAA), Mr Craig Fraiser.
There was a lot of hype in the air with all the anglers trying to figure out a game plan for the following day. The sponsors added hype with amazing prizes up for grabs – including the King Price N$50 000 fish over 3,5 kg, as well as the Optic Exclusive N$10 000 for the biggest fish of the tournament.
As expected, the fishing was really tough on the first day of competition and bites where really hard to come by. Nine of the 16 teams blanked for the day. Only two teams managed to catch a limit of fish (3 fish limit) and seemed to be have figured out somewhat of a pattern.
After day 1 team WMB Lureworks held the lead, with team Williams & Knight II close behind and team Williams & Knight 1 in third place. Richard Grant from Team WBM Lureworks was in the lead for the biggest fish prize with a fish of 1,75 kg. The lead was slender and anything could happen the following day.
Sunday morning dawned and the hype was all around. Anglers moved out to their spots on the dam to find some elusive bass. The fishing proved to be even tougher than the day before and making every bite count was critical. All boats checked in before 15:00 and the wait was on to see who would be crowned champions for 2020.
The final results were as follows:
1. Team WBM Lureworks – Neil Engelbrecht & Richard Grant
2. Team Williams & Knight II – Thinus Williams
3. Team Optic Exclusive – Reinhard Lagger & Pascal Ahlers
Sunday did however produce one really good fish, good enough to snatch the Optic Exclusive N$10 000 away from the day 1 leader. A beautiful fish of 1,998 kg was weighed in by Craig Gutteridge, all the way from Mercury South Africa.
Team Optic Exclusive managed to go from blanking of day 1 to third place overall by having a really good second day. Just goes to show how many variables come into play in this wonderful sport. The King Price N$50 000 fish eluded all the anglers.
The event was made possible by the following sponsors: Mercury South Africa, King Price Insurance, Optic Exclusive, Radiowave, Cymot, Surf & Turf, Bushwhackers, Score Energy Drink, Tyre Rack, Lake Oanob Resort, Paratus, Eurolux / Radiant Lighting, Jan Jonker Service Station, FrameTique, Williams & Knight Insurance Brokers, WBM Lureworks
