Electricity production capacity needs to improve

PHILLEPUS UUSIKU For the month of June 2021, Namibia mainly imported its electricity from Eskom Aggeneis, Zesco-Firm Zambia and ZPC-Zimbabwe due to a decline in local generation of electricity.The import index went up monthly, registering an increase of 5.8% in June 2021, while in May 2021 the index marginal increased by 0.4%.According to the Namibia Statistics Agency (NSA), given these developments, the electricity sources composite index that is composed of own generation and imported electricity recorded a decline of 4.7% in June 2021 on a monthly basis, whereas in May 2021 it registered a marginal increase of 0.2%. On a yearly basis, the index recorded a reduction of 11.4%.Local generation of electricity declined by 32.5% monthly and 55.9% yearly due to the reduced generation from the Ruacana Power Station, NSA pointed out.Local production of electricity stood at 64 155 MWh in June 2021 compared to 95 027 MWh produced in May 2021, while 265 577 MWh of electricity was imported during the same month of 2021, NSA added.SalesThe electricity sales composite index for June 2021 declined by 4.1% on a monthly basis, compared to an increase of 4.3% recorded in May 2021. The index posted a growth of 1.8% year-on-year. The annual increase in the sale of electricity is owed to increase in domestic consumption of electricity for the period under review, NSA said.The domestic sales Index declined by 4.2% month on month while registering an increase of 1.9% on an annual basis. The rise in domestic sales emanates from sales to redistributors and mines. The export sales index posted a monthly increase of 1.1% in June 2021 compared to a reduction of 1.9% registered in May 2021. On an annual basis, the index went down by 3.7%. The monthly increase in electricity export was destined to South Africa (SA), Rietfontein and Angola, NSA pointed out.In the month of June 2021, a total of 284 881 MWh of electricity was sold in the domestic economy compared to 297 400 MWh sold in May 2021. Additionally, 9 015 MWh of electricity was exported in June 2021 compared to exports of 8 915 MWh recorded during the preceding month, NSA said.
