Education minister calls on public for help
Adolf Kaure - The minister of education, arts and culture, Ms Katrina Hanse-Himawa, has called on members of the public to help the government address social discrepancies.
She said this at a recent event in Henties Bay where the Councillor Michael Skini Charity Cup group handed over pledges to the Kamwandi Combined School.
During her keynote address, the minister commended the initiative saying that the government cannot address societal issues on its own.
“I also underpin the fact that education is a societal issue, therefore initiatives from members of the public to complement government efforts are always welcome,” said Hanse-Himarwa.
The pledge from the group will be awarded to the best performing grade nine learner in a mother tongue subject.
The learner will receive the full payment of the grade 10 exam fee, hostel fee (if the learner is a hostel boarder) and grade 10 school uniform respectively.
The minister added that this donation will enable the government to achieve the United Nations’ post 2015 agenda of sustainable development goals (SDGs) which aims at ”Inclusive and equitable quality education and lifelong learning for all by 2030”.
Abner Xoagub contributed N$1 304 towards the repair of broken windows at the Kamwandi Combined School. New Point Solutions donated five computers to the school while Humphries Mutumba, the director of the National Youth Service donated a printer to the school. A netball kit and a school uniform was also donated.
The aim of the Michael Skini Cup is to mobilise and rally financial and material support towards social responsibility and call for investments in the community of Henties Bay.
