Du Plessis-Epukiro road upgrade in next financial year

Work on the upgrading of the Du Plessis-Epukiro road in the Omaheke Region is expected to commence during the 2018/19 financial year, the Roads Authority (RA) has said.According to the current Development Budget, N$3 million will be spent on the project in the 2018/19 fiscal year, starting on 1 April. Another N$10 million was set aside for 2019/20, according to the budget document.The starting date of the project, according to the budget, was in January 2015 and an estimated N$10 million was spent on it in 2016/17. No money was earmarked for the upgrade in the current budget year.The total cost of the project is estimated to be N$235 million and it is scheduled for completion in March 2021, according to the current development budget.The corporate communication manager of the RA, Hileni Fillemon, told Nampa on Monday the detailed design of the project is expected to be completed during the coming fiscal year. This will pave the way for the start of construction once funds are made available by the government.“Tender evaluation has been completed and the consultancy tender was awarded to Element Consulting Engineering for N$18 145 937 for detailed design and supervision of the project,” Fillemon said.Construction periodShe said the construction period of the project will be determined after the detailed design is completed and a contractor is appointed.She however added that most projects of this nature (upgrading to bitumen standard) are completed over a period of 36 months depending on the availability of funds, length of the road and performance of the contractor.The existing gravel road, which stretches for 47 kilometres, will be upgraded to bitumen standard.This road links to the trunk road 14/2: Gobabis – Otjinene.The two roads were re-classified from district roads to main roads that serve Epukiro Constituency as well as Eiseb in the Otjombinde Constituency. “This project reflects an action to implement the Rural Area Road Development Policy of the ministry of works and transport and the Rural Access Development Programme embedded in the Medium to Long-Term Roads Master Plan and focused on previously neglected rural areas,” Fillemon said. - Own reporting and Nampa
