DTS Maerua Superspar beach volleyball
THE sixth of seven tournaments in the 2010 DTS Maerua Superspar Volleyball Series took place on Saturday with 28 teams participating in very hot weather conditions. Teams took part in a round robin of high quality beach volleyball to determine the best team.
Four teams were just about equal and most games were only decided in the third tie break set. Junior team Julia Laggner/ Corinna Wahl (17/18 years) from DHPS won their first senior tournament with three impressive wins, only losing one game 2-1 against Karin Curschmann/ Brigitte Looser who eventually finished fourth. Lizette Roettcher/Katja Biesemann only lost one game to Laggner/Wahl, but due to losing one set more, finished second overall.
Third place went to Wiebke Hoeritzauer/Antje Kesselmann. The men’s competion saw a few new teams taking part, with a very strong team of Heiko Diehl/Peter Brinkmann one of the favourites of the five teams competing. In the most exciting match, Michael de Koe/Ruben Delie gave away five match points against Diehl/Brinkmann when they were 21-14, 20-15 up, but Diehl/Brinkmann fought back to win the second set 23-21 and De Koe/Delie had no chance in the third set, losing 15-8 to give Diehl/Brinkmann the tournament title.
Second place went to veteran team Deon Cloete/Heiko Kesselmann who also beat De Koe/Delie in a very close match by 2-1 sets (20-22, 26-24, 15-11) with De Koe/Delie finishing third. The youth competition attracted six teams and they played a round robin format, 15 games in total which kept them busy until late afternoon.
Unbeaten throughout the day were Wolfgang Erb/Gian Rudolph, who did not lose a single set. Runnerup team Christoph Thesen/Erik Fischer only lost one game while third place went to Wiko Stiehler/ Rico Behrens. The 4-a-side social category had 12 teams battling it out for the tournament title.
The top 8 teams that qualified for the quarter-finals were The Uncardables, Fx Fitness, Cats & Dogs, Superstars, Set for Life, Woema Putte, Intouch Four and Die Supa. Current leaders and defending champions The Uncardables dropped out in the quarter-finals against Intouch Four.
In the semi finals Fx Fitness lost 2-0 to a very strong NDF team called Superstars, while Cats & Dogs eliminated Intouch Four. In the final Cats & Dogs won the first set comfortably by 21- 13, but in the second set the Superstars fought back to 21-21 before Cats & Dogs showed their skills to win 23-21, giving them their first tournament victory this year. Third place went to Intouch Four.
Tawanda Munyawiri from the Cats & Dogs team was voted as the Fx Fitness Most Athletic Male Player of the tournament, while 2-a-side junior player Corinna Wahl was chosen as the Fx Fitness Most Athletic Female Player.
