Namibia's Olympic rower Maike Diekmann secured her first ever A final spot after coming in second in the semi-final of the 2021 World Rowing Cup III in Sabaudia, Italy.

It was all very close in the early stages of heat one with Pia Greiten of Germany crossing the 500-metre marker first with a time of 07:36.68. Audrey Feutrie of France was in second with a time of 07:38.57. Diekmann took the third spot, clocking 07:39.49.

In the semi-final, Diana Dymchenko of Ukraine won the race with a time of 07:42.90, with Diekmann coming in second in 07:43.75.

Switzerland’s Lovisa Claesson was in third with a time of 07:44.08.

Before going to print, the Namibian rower was scheduled to compete in the Final A of the competition. Diekmann has come a long way since she awkwardly climbed into a rowboat for the first time in 2015, etching her name into the history books as the first rower from Namibia to compete at the Olympic Games.
