Deutsche Post and DHL Namibia partnership launches a first in Africa
DHL Express Namibia and DHL Global Mail, two divisions of Deutsche Post DHL, have formed a partnership with NamPost and launched the first International Mail Processing Centre (IMPC) in Africa.
The 3-year partnership between DHL Express Namibia, DHL Global Mail (EEMEA) and NamPost, the Namibian postal service provider, took almost a year to come to fruition and started operations on the 11th February 2010. The international mail processing centre serves as a reliable mail off-set point from Africa into the rest of the world and visa versa.
The partnership which resulted in the International Mail Processing Centre in Namibia is in line with Deutsche Post World Net?s Strategy 2015 aimed at making the company fit for the future.
The new Deutsche Post DHL will rest on two pillars: an integrated international logistics company focusing on quality and customer service and a strong mail business with a clear commitment to the universal service obligation in Germany ? complemented by new value-added electronic services.
?The DHL brand stands for personal commitment, proac-tive solutions and local strength in the parcel business as well as in international express, logistics and mail operations. Our employees, who focus on customers? needs and provide them with individually customized solutions, help secure our success locally,? says Phil Couchman, CEO, DHL SSA.
?This partnership between DHL Express and DHL Global Mail, with NamPost, is an excellent example of implementing the directive of Strategy 2015 as the Express, the Global Mail and the Global Forwarding units are all housed under the same roof as the International Mail Processing Centre, at DHL?s existing warehouse in Windhoek, Namibia.?
DHL Global Mail is the quality leader for mail logistics and a reliable partner for international solutions along the mail value chain.
With a market share of 14% DHL Global Mail is one of the world?s two largest providers of cross-border mail services. DHL Global Mail operates offices and production facilities in four continents, with direct connections to more than 200 countries.
?In addition to our existing cross-border mail business, we increasingly focus on intra-regional mail traffic in major markets and are expanding mail value-added services.
The solution that the new IMPC in Namibia offers, will not only entrench DHL Global Mail in the African market but holds benefits for the local economy and NamPost, as we ensure the transfer of both first class mail technology and operational skills,? says Tikhon Evdokimov, Managing Director EEMEA at Deutsche Post Global Mail.
DHL has existing IMPC?s in the US, Germany, the UK and Singapore. This is the first of its kind in Africa.
?As a start, we have seconded a staff member from NamPost with local mail operations knowledge and have invested in skills transfer from our German Mail Terminal operations. DHL DP divisions have always shown their commitment in the countries that we operate in, and we also aim to increase our investments in Namibia through the IMPC operations. As the project rolls out and volumes increase, there is huge potential for local employment opportunities in Namibia.?
Additionally, this partnership holds huge benefits for Africa. ?Besides offering an internationally tried and tested mail solution and access to our global network, it offers reliability, quality improvement for mailbag exchange, transit time improvements and cost savings. We are excited at the prospect of contributing to the Namibian economy and providing an unprecedented service to Africa? says Hennie Heymans, DHL Director, Central Africa.
